Found in the year of 1949, the School of Mechanical Engineering of Dalian University of Technology (DUTME) is one of the most influential personnel cultivation and research bases in China. Since it establishment, DUTME always strives to be the best in personnel cultivation, scientific research and educational activities. We hope that every student can acquire knowledge extensively, foster good virtue of humanity and give with what they have learned back to the society after finishing a well-designed education here.
DUTME is one of the top schools of this university in terms of scale and research ability, with a total of 3277 faculty members and students, including 231 academic staff, 16 post-doctors, 361 Ph.D candidates, 1242 postgraduates and 1427 undergraduates. The Mechanical Engineering Discipline ranked A level (top 2% to 5%) in the 4th round of China Discipline Evaluation, becoming one of the best disciplines of DUT.
DUTME keeps attracting and cultivating quality personnel, building a high-level faculty team led by prominent academicians. The School has 146 full-time professional staff, 72 out of whom are professors/research fellows. Our faculty have won more than 40 national-level honors and awards, including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 fellow of the Office of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee Subject Evaluation Group, 4 distinguished professors and 2 young scholars of the Changjiang Scholar Incentive Program, 2 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 4 professors and 2 young talents supported by the national Ten-thousand Talents Plan, 2 national candidates of the Hundred/Thousand/Ten-Thousand Talents Project, 1 National Outstanding Teacher, 8 recipients of the special government allowance from the State Council, 2 recipients of the national Excellent Young Scientists Fund, and 6 National Young Scientific Talents. DUTME also possesses Innovation Teams supported by the Nature Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Ministry of Education (MoE) and Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST). Particularly, the High-Performance Precision Manufacturing Research Team won the first prize of the The State Scientific and Technological Progress Award.
DUTME provides educational resources featured in personnel cultivation, including 2 first-level discipline doctoral programs, 2 first-level discipline master programs, 9 second-level discipline doctoral programs and 9 second-level discipline master programs. The undergraduate major of “Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation” is a national specialty, having earned a six-year certification from the China Engineering Education Accreditation Association with excellent grades for two consecutive times. The School is also known for its 2 National Experimental Teaching Demonstrating Centers, 5 National Excellent Courses/National Excellent Resource Sharing Courses/National First-class Courses and a National Teaching Team, as well as 6 National Teaching Achievement Awards. Textbooks written by DUTME faculty such as Mechanical Manufacturing Equipment Design(also known as Metal Cutting Machine Tools) and Modern Engineering Drawing(also known as Engineering Drawing) have a profound influence nationwide. The School also plays an important role in cultivating innovative and practical abilities with the establishment of the National Demonstrative Joint Training Base for Professional Degree Graduates in Collaborative Innovation of Major Machine Manufacturing, which is the first base in the field of mechanical engineering in northeast China.
DUTME devotes itself to social advancement, producing a number of high-level original research achievements. The School undertakes a multitude of national scientific research tasks in fields like high-performance manufacturing, precision and ultra-precision machining, micro/nano manufacturing, intelligent mechatronics and major equipment design, having taken good advantage of 600 million research fund in the past five years. DUTME has won more than 80 STEM prizes at provincial and ministerial level, 6 of which ranked the top at national level, including 2 first prizes of the State Technological Invention Award, 1 first prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award(Innovative Groups) and 3 second prizes of the State Technological Invention Award. Many of its research achievements have been transferred and applied in institutes and enterprises of key fields nationwide, such as the development of the Long March 5 Series Launch Vehicle, the first flight of airliner COMAC919, the lunar landing mission of Yu Tu rover, as well as major national projects such as the South-to-North Water Diversion Project and the West to East Natural Gas Transmission Project.
DUTME builds on a solid foundation for scientific research with a number of high-level platforms, such as the National Collaborative Innovation Center and 7 research bases at provincial and ministerial level, of which the Key Laboratory for Precision and Non-traditional Machining Technology of MoE has been evaluated as excellent and ranked first in the field of engineering and materials twice.
The school is very inclusive and open to the outside world, continuing to advance international collaboration. DUTME has engaged in good partnership with universities and research institutes around the world, participating in projects like of the DUT-UCI Joint Program and Plan 111 Personnel-introducing Platform, which attracts 33 overseas professors to deliver guest lectures and/or co-supervise postgraduate students. Moreover, DUTME was the first to advocate the “Schoolfellow Friendship” Initiative, promoting communication about personnel cultivation with other universities in Northeast Asia like Osaka University (Japan).
In pursuit of excellence, DUTME has sent a multitude of high-quality personnel to society. The school aims to cultivate pioneers in academia, leaders in society, heads in business, and trailblazers in engineering, preparing numbers of outstanding scientists, politicians, entrepreneurs and professionals for the cause of human advancement. In the past 70 years, the school has produced a total of 28,000 graduates, among whom are many distinguished alumni taking leadership roles in different areas, such as the former secretary of Liaoning Provincial Committee of the CPC Mr. Shizhen Wen, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering Prof. Xingchu Xu, Prof. Hongru Yu, Prof. Guomao Yin, Prof. Changyu Shen, Prof. Dongming Guo, Prof. Zhenyuan Jia, and entrepreneurs such as Dr. Runfeng Ni and Mr. Xianping Xu, etc.
